About the Library

Sankardev College Library has been instated since the inception of the College in 1962. The Central library has been a great source of knowledge for the students and staff of the College. It caters to the needs of the users and its library housekeeping activities is fully automated with the Software KOHA. The library provides access to resources, facilities and services and fulfills the information needs of the college by implementing optimum standards in ensuring the efficient maintenance of its resources and services with an excellent ambiance for learning environment.

 The motto of the library is “SAVE THE TIME AND TO CATER THE INFORMATION NEEDS OF THE USER” The Library takes the initiative to upgrade from time to time with the change in ICT.

LIBRARY INFRASTRUCTURE

The college Central Library is shifted to a new annexure building Multi Facility Block (MFB). The following are the infra-structural improvements of the different sections of the new library:

Description about the College Central Library:

All Members of the Sankardev College fraternity are eligible to become members of the central library:

  • Teaching staff
  • Non-teaching staff
  • Students both undergraduate and postgraduate
  • Other non-members (with prior permission from the principal and vice principal)

SERVICES/FACILITIES AVAILABLE IN THE LIBRARY:

  1. CIRCULATION:
  • The library provides the facilities of issue/return and renewal of library documents.
  • Students who have registered in the library are eligible to take books as per library rules and regulations.
  • Teaching and non-teaching (excluding part time) can issue books from the Central Library.
  • Reference collection, question papers, bound volumes are for reference only.
  • In this section, Students are allowed to access freely and may independently browse the library holding.

2.REFERENCE:

This section includes:

  • Encyclopedia-general and subject wise.
  • Dictionaries –general and subject wise.
  • Government publications.
  • Conference/seminars proceedings etc.
  • In house publications and PHD thesis.
  • Books on career counseling.
  • (Rare books, bible, very expensive books, north east reference collection etc…).  The collection in this section is not meant to be issued but may be used for reference and photocopying only.     

            

3. PHOTOCOPY:

A Xerox machine is also available in the Library. Students can avail this facility for photocopying the library documents.

 

4. CURRENT AWARENESS SERVICE:

The current awareness service is provided to the users. New arrivals are being displayed of books and journals. The purpose of CAS is to inform the users about new acquisitions in the library.                              

5. COMPUTERS, SCANNING /PRINTING:

  • The Library has a Computer Section which is equipped with 12 computers with internet connection. This enables users to have access to e-resources and browse for assignments, project works and so on and so forth.
  • Scanner and printer are other facilities available in the Library for users

6. OPAC(Online Public Access Catalogue):

The software KOHA make OPAC accessible where user can browse about the library holdings and know about the books issued/due and available for issue and reservation. OPAC can be accessed from any location with availability of internet connection by log- in the IP address provided by the Library staff. 

7. FREE WIFI ENVIRONMENT:

The library facilitates a free wifi broadband connection in which students can use free of cost. They are allowed to access through their laptops, tabs and phones.

8. BIOMETRICS:

Biometrics fingerprint device is installed in the library to enable users to login and identify the average ratio of total footfall on a daily basis.                     

9. ORIENTATION PROGRAMME:

The library staff organizes orientation programmes for new admissions annually and when the need arises .This aims to highlight the facilities, services and activities conducted by the central library so that students can avail it to the maximum extend.

10. USER SERVICE (SOFT SKILL, ORGANIZING SEMINARS/WORKSHOPS ETC..)

  • The Library staff conducts user services annually and mainly focus on themes about ICT and use of E-Resources.
  • Seminars, workshops are organized from time to time with the initiative of the IQAC cell, in which resource persons from government offices and experts in the field are invited to make the users aware and enhance their skills. Participants from other colleges are also invited.

            

 

11. BARCODE:

For accuracy and fast transactions a barcode is installed which is compatible with the software KOHA.  

12. E-RESOURCES :

  • NLIST (National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content): The College subscribe to N-LIST from 2010 till date. It is subscribed through the UGC-INFONET Library Consortium and INDEST AICTE Consortium and is a part of e-Shodh Sindhu consortium, INFLIBNET, Gujarat. The N-LIST provides access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculty of the college. All members can log in with an email id and password, and can access freely from anywhere with internet connection.
  • NDLI (National Digital Library of India).

The college registered under NDLI in 2022.It is a National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) a project developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. The National Digital Library of India is a single window platform that provides learning resources with an aim to make e-learning and education accessible to all and to bring to users of all demographies, digital repository from India and the world.

13. QUESTION PAPERS/SYLLABUS:

Question papers in all papers of annual, semester and NEP are available both in hard copy and a link is being generated which students and teachers can have access in the college website. Syllabus is available for all courses.

14. BEST LIBRARY USER AWARD:

This is one of the important activities that the library Committee organizes annually. The Best library user award is given to those students who utilize the Library facilities, resources and services to the maximum extent. Students from the 6th semester are selected to receive the award. This is done to promote reading habits and motivates students to visit the library regularly.

15. PHOTO GALLERY:

Photos of the different activities in the college are kept in the central library for students to browse and get a copy of their choice.

16. PROJECTOR:

Projector is installed in the Library in order to enable library staff to demonstrate different library activities like soft skill, orientation programme, Librarian’s day, display of other documents and activities as the need arises from time to time.

17. INVERTER:

The library is equipped with inverter to facilitate smooth running of all the systems without break.

18. CCTV SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM:

The whole premises of the library are under CCTV surveillance to have a close watch of the library premises and its surroundings. A total of 8 CCTV’s are installed which focus the different sections of the library.

Automation started since the year 2002.Upto 2006 the College Central Library was partially automated where circulation is done for teaching faculties only. From 2007 onwards the Library was fully automated using the customized software LMS (Library Management Software). It was later upgraded to a new version which is fully automated and renamed as E-LIB.

In the year 2019, the library committee felt the need to upgrade the library software as per the current trend which is widely used by libraries all over the world. KOHA, open source software (customized) was installed. The entire collection of the library has been migrated, exported and conversion of the existing data is being transferred from E-LIB (existing software) to KOHA software by Avior Technologies, Kolkata.

All the teaching staff and the students are the members to the N-List Inflibnet and eligible to use as all has been assigned own login ID and password and can access from anywhere.
